Heavenly BodiesHeavenly Bodies, You and I? By Karen Henry

This quilt was made for a Mariners Quilt Guild Challenge in June of 2007. Quilters are ‘heavenly bodies’ that come in many shapes and sizes. These two are visiting the local quilt show, and comparing notes. Their forms remain the same but the faces change frequently!

Felix Feneon
Portrait of Felix Feneon, against Fabric, of a Background Rhythm with Beats and Angles, Textures, Tones and Colors      Size: 49” x 38 ½”

This quilt was made for the Art Hits the Wall show held in Liverpool, Nova Scotia in June, 2004. The theme of the show was to do a personal interpretation of a piece of art. I chose this piece painted by Paul Signac in 1880 for its vibrancy and for the challenge it would offer me. I loved Signac's use of colour to create a feeling of tempo. I chose to add texture to this work to enhance the movement in the piece other than changing the actual depiction. I used sequins, beads, fabric, threads, and quilting to reflect the pointillist style. The face is hand painted in dots, and the hair is is confetti style. It is machine quilted.

Curated in Natonal Juried Show at Quilt Ontario in Waterloo, Ont, 2005.

Megan's World
Megan's World
Size: 47" x 72"

I chose to represent Megan at a moment in time. She is a quiet, intense individual who can spontaneously bubble up to share her enthusiasm of a particular subject. The tones in the background of the quilt represent her daily schedule and perhaps her more sedate self.

In one moment her routine is overcome by her excitement and is affected by the whirlwind of her thoughts and motions represented by colours and objects around her.

A Quiet ConversationA Quiet Conversation       Size: 30 1/4 “ x 43 ¼”

This picture is adapted from a photograph of my mother and sister at Shubie Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It was a glorious autumn day to be celebrating the outdoors. I pieced the background trees to keep the shapes and seams straight and enhance the flow of the raw edge appliquéd leaves behind the heads.

The bright leaves and the leaning figures are held in check by the rails of the bridge. The rails are emphasized by the straight quilting lines. New growth and more leaves escape the rails on the left bottom to continue the flow of colour. The end work has a lovely cozy feeling.

Curated in to National Juried Show, Ottawa Ont, 2006.
