My Father’s Dahlias
Size: 46 ½” x 33 ½”
This piece was adapted from a photograph I took of dahlias from my backyard. I wished to capture the bright energy of the blossoms in fabric. The most difficult part was finding the appropriate whites for the white dahlia. I like the variety offered by commercial prints to add extra interest to my images. The petals of some of the white dahlia and edges of the pink one have an extra layer of batting to enhance a three dimensional illusion. The background becomes a blur of greens, and in itself frames the large flowers.
My father gave me quite a variety of flowers to start my new garden.

White Roses
Size: 35” x 25 ½”
I was inspired to make this quilt for an inner quilt challenge. Rhoda Moore of the Mayflower Quilters’ Guild challenged members to a rose parade, any quilt with roses.
In response I decided to create an illusionof light filtering downwards. I used various shades of green leaves and quilted with silver toned metallic thread to produce tha effect. To achieve a layered look, some of the leaves are raw-edge appliquéd under tulle, and others are hand-appliqued on top. As well, more leaves are quilted with black metallic thread in the dark background areas. The final product is lush and inviting.
Curated in to the National Juried Show, at Quilt Canada in Winnipeg MB, May 2005. First prize, Viewer's Choice, Mayflower Quilt Guild, Parade of Roses, January, 2004.

Wild Tulips Size: 18" x 22"
Using Maija Brummer's technique from the 'Quilting Arts' summer 2005 magazine, I created an abstract of tulips. The technique is to build and layer on lace and/or tulle. The project has a looser feel as it is not as structured as other types of quilting. I used satins and velvets to create a lusher feel to the project. Only the border is quilted.

Irises Size: 18" x 24 ½"
Using Maija Brummers' technique from the 'Quilting Arts' summer 2005 magazine, I created these loose irises. Unlike the 'Wild Tulips', the irises are heavily satin stitched in various colours. Some satin is used as
well as variegated threads. Only the border is quilted.

Spiced Clematis 42 ½” X 33 ½”
Using a photograph of clematis on my back lattice as a base, I designed this Wall hanging in the style of Jane Sassaman, a quilt artist from the United States. Ms. Sassaman’s construction techniques are quite different from the traditional method employed by quilters.
Although I do not think I have mastered her technique, I believe I have come closer to understanding her methods. The project was a pleasure to make. It is machine pieced, appliquéd and quilted.
